Today a new RNLI memorial has been unveiled in Poole to commemorate the 778 lives lost helping others at sea. As a regular traveller to France by ferry I am comforted to know that such a service is available in an emergency.
The RNLI lifeboat crews provide this on a voluntary basis.
Their motto is 'never turn back' - the RNLI is a worthy cause deserving of a donation.
